Padel in Tenerife

Tenerife's case for padel is the weather, and it is a genuinely strong one. The south of the island is warm and dry through the northern-European winter, which makes it one of very few places you can play outdoors in comfort in December and January without leaving the continent's flight range.

Arrive at: Tenerife South (TFS)

Tenerife South (TFS) is the airport to fly into — it sits about twenty minutes from the Costa Adeje strip where the padel is. Tenerife North (TFN) is over an hour away on the other side of the island and is the wrong choice unless you are specifically heading for Puerto de la Cruz.

Within the resort area distances are short, and a taxi to a club is a routine, brief journey rather than an expedition. A hire car is useful for exploring the island but is not necessary just to get to a court.

We do not publish a price per hour for court hire in Tenerife, and we would rather say so than guess. Rates differ between clubs, between seasons and between the middle of the day and seven in the evening, and a number written here today would be wrong by next summer. What does not change is how the charge works, and that is the part worth knowing before you book.

You hire the court, by the hour — not a place on it. The price is the same whether two of you turn up or four, so a game splits four ways as a matter of course, which is why padel works out cheaper per head than most racket sports. Peak slots, which in Spain means the evening after work, cost more than midday ones and are booked first. Rackets can normally be hired at the club for a small extra charge if you have not travelled with one, and balls are sometimes included and sometimes not — worth asking when you book rather than at the desk.

Bookings are almost always made through an app rather than by phone, courts are released a fixed number of days ahead, and they are open to visitors rather than members only. If there are only two of you, ask the club about open play or an Americano session instead of booking a court — being paired with two other players is the normal way to get a game, and it is how you meet people who play here. This is the whole point of Tenerife: there is no closed season. The south of the island is comfortable for outdoor sport all year, and the winter months are the ones where it beats every mainland alternative — Spain's Mediterranean coast can be genuinely cold in January in a way Tenerife is not.

The trade-off is that peak summer in the south can be hot and the resorts are full, so the same early-morning and evening pattern applies as anywhere else in Spain. If you are choosing Tenerife specifically for the padel, the winter months are when it is at its most distinctive.
