Our bases sit right in the centre — from the landmark InterContinental on Praça da Liberdade to a riverside Vila Galé down in the Ribeira — with the courts a short taxi away at clubs like the Porto Tennis Club and Top-Padel Fluvial. The city rewards the hours off court as much as on: the Douro waterfront, the port lodges across the river in Gaia, the Livraria Lello and some of the best-value eating in the country are all close at hand. It's a smaller, cooler-climate alternative to the Algarve or Lisbon, with real northern charm.

Those wanting beach-resort downtime and guaranteed heat should head south, but for atmosphere and value Porto is a delight.

Best time to play

Porto's Atlantic north is milder and greener than southern Portugal, and a little more changeable. Late spring to early autumn is the most reliable window for warm, dry days — ideal for pairing padel with the riverside and the port lodges. Summer is comfortable rather than scorching, which suits sightseeing; winter is cooler and can be wet, so a covered or indoor court is worth confirming, which we do when we build the trip.

Getting there

Porto airport is close to the city — often just 15–20 minutes to central hotels — with frequent budget flights from the UK and a quick metro or taxi into town. Once there, the compact centre is walkable and the courts are a short ride out, so a hire car isn't necessary for a city trip.

1. Day 1 — Fly into Porto, check in centrally, and watch the sunset over the Douro from the Ribeira.

Nearby areas

Porto is the gateway to the north. The Douro Valley wine country runs inland along the river for one of Europe's great day trips; the beaches of Matosinhos and Foz sit at the city's edge; and the historic university city of Braga and the green Minho lie an hour or so north. A river cruise from the Ribeira is the easy local excursion.
